Project realized within the framework of the National Programme for the Development of the Humanities by Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw in 2012-2023.

In 2010 the members from Balts Archaeology Department of the State Archaeological Museum in Warsaw; Marcin Engel, Cezary Sobczak and Grażyna Iwanowska initiated the project The Catalogue of strongholds of Yotvingia, to which the local researchers of the historical Yotvingia area were invited.

Andy Burnham created this site and runs it in a voluntary capacity. It is funded as a non-profit making independent society with membership and a committee. Andy writes: I am an amateur in hopefully the best sense of the word. Where I don't know something I take the advice of the more knowledgeable. Over the years, this project has become a major team effort with input from thousands of photographers, archaeologists, locals and visitors so individual comments are the views of individual contributors.

A research team based at the universities of Oxford, Edinburgh and University College Cork has been helped by citizen scientists from across England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Ireland.

Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), they have spent the last five-years sifting and recording information on all the hillforts across Britain and Ireland. They have discovered there are 4,147 hillforts in total, and have collated details for every one on a website that will be accessible to the public – and completely free.
